Our Journey – The Story of Cooperative Ground Durga Puja

The legacy of Cooperative Ground Durga Puja began in 1975, with its roots in J Block, Chittaranjan Park , where the first-ever Puja was organized on the J Block ground. However, in 1976, the original celebration branched into three separate Pujas — one of which laid the foundation for what we now know as the Cooperative Ground Durga Puja . The new venue was the serene park adjacent to K Block , where the Samity found its home.

The inaugural Puja was humble, with a total budget of ₹5,700 , and was brought to life by the efforts of five pioneering individuals: L ate A. B. Dasgupta, Late B. N. Das, Late P. B. Datta, Late A. K. Mitra, and Late D. N. Chakraborty . What started without any formal vision soon began to flourish, fueled by the growing Bengali community in the area.

By the 1980s, a spirited group of young enthusiasts, including Somnath Ganguly, Samir Datta, and Shankar Bose, became the driving force behind the Puja. In the mid-1990s, Jadav Ch. Dey * also joined this growing family, helping to shape the evolving celebration.

Until 1993, the Puja maintained a simple and intimate character, rooted in tradition and community warmth. But in 1994 , a landmark decision was made — to embrace a more creative and grander scale of celebration. The Samity introduced thematic pandals and artistic idols, marking a new chapter in the Puja’s history.

Since then, Cooperative Ground Durga Puja has consistently presented unique themes and captivating installations, earning it the distinction of being one of the most awarded Pujas in Delhi NCR.

What began as a modest community effort has grown into a cultural beacon — a celebration of art, devotion, and togetherness that proudly carries forward a rich legacy.
